About Andrea

Andrea Cornell, LMFT, is the founder of Cornell & Associates Marriage and Family Therapy and works in private practice with individuals, couples, and families. She brings over two decades of clinical experience to her work and is known for a grounded, relational approach that integrates depth psychology with practical, emotionally attuned care.
Andrea’s professional path began with the study of psychology at University of California, Santa Cruz, followed by early clinical work in public health, including a post-graduate internship at UCSF AIDS Health Project. She later earned a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, with an emphasis in transpersonal therapy.
Following graduate school, Andrea completed advanced psychoanalytic training at The Access Institute for Psychological Services, deepening her appreciation for psychodynamic work and the ways early relationships, unconscious patterns, and lived experience continue to shape emotional life in the present. She is licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in both California and New York and works bi-coastally with clients in each state.
Andrea’s background includes extensive public service work with families involved in the Family Court system, preventative family services, and foster care. These experiences continue to inform her ability to work thoughtfully with complex family dynamics, developmental trauma, and high-stress life circumstances.
She later established a successful private practice that grew into Cornell & Associates, a group practice of twelve therapists, before intentionally returning to a private practice model. This evolution reflects her desire to work closely and consistently with clients, offering therapy that feels personal, relational, and deeply attentive.
Andrea specializes in the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression and is certified in hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Her work integrates psychodynamic, attachment-based, humanistic, and somatic approaches, with a belief that lasting change emerges through insight, emotional awareness, and nervous system regulation.
Outside of the therapy room, Andrea values practices that support presence and balance, including meditation, hot yoga, caring for animals, spending time in nature, and the ongoing study of philosophy, energy work, and somatic healing.
Andrea offers both in-person and telehealth therapy to clients in New York and California and is committed to creating a therapeutic space that feels safe, steady, and respectful — a place where people can slow down, feel understood, and work toward meaningful, lasting change.
